Expressions of
Positive Culture

After thousands of years of war on nature and war on each other, our mainstream culture of domination and exploitation is leading to collapse. However an alternate worldview and culture is emerging, one that naturally leads to social justice and environmental stewardship. We are transitioning from a Material worldview to a Planetary worldview, from seeing only a material world made of separate objects that can be exploited and manipulated for personal gain, to seeing the world as interconnected, with interwoven living systems relying on each other and functioning as a whole. This view of the world implies and insures social justice and environmental stewardship. The Planet Project aims to support and promote the shift to a Planetary worldview by means of culture. In this section of the website we will be collecting, organizing, and bringing you expressions of culture that support and promote the Planetary worldview. And we welcome your nominations!

This shift is already in progress and there are many change agents actively involved in manifesting this shift. We will foster this macro-shift from Material Culture to Planetary Culture by highlighting books, films, podcasts, articles, videos, music, social media posts and other cultural expressions that provide direct evidence of this shift. We refer to these expressions as positive culture – both because it provides positive evidence of this macro-shift and also because it inspires us to positive action and service; it gives us hope, and provides tools that promote wellbeing. Positive culture has stories about the world we want, with characters who model kindness and courage, compassion and respect, partnership and healing, WE and not just ME.

What this points to, in our view, is a crisis of imagination. Humans at heart are storytellers, and we enact the stories we tell ourselves. If humanity is going to unlock "the good ending," we've got to imagine it first. We've got to imagine ten thousand localized versions of it. That's how things change. Fortunately, visions of a more beautiful, compassionate, regenerative future already exist. But since they're not being broadcast daily on the evening news, we've got to dedicate a little more energy towards broadcasting them ourselves. This is what this list of films is for.

https://choosingearth.org/book/Choosing Earth (Book)Category: Climate ChangeFormat: BookSource: Duane ElginThe challenges facing humanity—from increasingly severe climate change and resource exhaustion to escalating social injustices and the rising threat of authoritarianism—call for a radical transformation in how we live on the planet. In this profoundly relevant and potent book, Choosing Earth, Duane Elgin brilliantly draws our vision into, and then beyond these tragedies of our own making, presenting collapse as an integral part of our rite of passage if humanity is to grow into conscious relationship with life. Choosing Earth envisions a fiery initiation that has the potential to transform humanity’s life-denying separations and awaken us to our deep interconnectedness—ultimately inspiring us to work together for the well-being of the entire Earth. With both visionary optimism and unflinching realism, Elgin draws on more than 50 years of research, writing and activism to develop this remarkable book that plants seeds of possibility and serves as a guide for our way through this time of great transformation.

https://naturaljustice.org/publication/community-protocols-toolbox-2016/Community Protocols ToolboxI want to Learn and I have Time for a Deeper DiveDuration: Time for a Deeper DiveCategory: Food SovereigntyFormat: BookSource: Natural JusticeThe purpose of this Toolbox is to serve as a first stop for facilitators who are interested in helping a community to develop a community protocol. Community Protocols provide a vehicle for external parties to meaningfully engage with communities, and for communities to catalyze their own internal development strategies. Communities are profoundly impacted by the effects of national policy decisions and development projects. Often, decisions related to these policies and projects are made without meaningful input from thosethat will bear the most direct impacts, i.e. indigenous peoples and local communities. This lack of involvement in the planning and implementation of projects can lead to a number of problems, including serious human rights violations. While national legislation and implementation of large infrastructure, extractive, agricultural and other projects can represent the state’s views of development, communities have their own visions for developmentas well. They also have cultural heritage that includes rich histories, traditions, worldviews, deep connections to their lands and natural resources, and customary rules and procedures to regulate conduct as well as interactions between themselves and other parties. This cultural heritage is manifested and expressed in many different ways such as oral traditions and folklore, dances, carvings, and designs.

We just believe it’s every adult’s responsibility to cast a vote, and to take the time to understand the issues and people running for our government. A society that provides a satisfying, culturally-rich context for lives well lived, in an economy not reliant on the impossible promise of eternal economic growth. A society worth living in. Worth fighting for. Worth contributing to.The beauty of the dictionary format is that it allows Fleming to draw connections without detracting from his in-depth exploration of each topic. Each entry carries intriguing links to other entries, inviting the enchanted reader to break free of the imposed order of a conventional book, starting where she will and following the links in the order of her choosing. In combination with Fleming’s refreshing writing style and good-natured humor, it also creates a book perfectly suited to dipping in and out.

The site is organized by topic so that you can do four things: you can view, you can do/take action, you can discuss the issues in our groups, and you can purchase goods that relate to the topics on the site. N2K currently has two ways to navigate our material, via subject and by map view. We will add other ways to engage in our second edition of the site.In our world in chaos and transition, we understand that there is a deluge of information that is often confusing and misleading. Even before fake news and the deep fake, it was difficult. Now, we understand that the time calls for a platform/channel that lights the pathway forward to a world that works. N2K is created by Tree Media, a production company that has long been in the business of working with innovators, world leaders and visionaries who are working to create solutions to pressing problems like climate disruption, justice and respect for first nations, the crisis in democracy, loss of beauty and the night sky, war and peace, destruction/resilience, black lives matter, the collapse of pollinators and so many other challenges that create opportunities for the new world to emerge. This is the platform that will track and follow all of these stories, and we are fiercely independent -- always have been, always will be. Any collaboration with known entities was with the subject matter and the truth at the core of our priorities.

https://onbeing.org/social-healing-at-on-being/On Being -- Civil Conversations and Social Healing ProjectI want to Learn and I have Time for a Deeper DiveDuration: Time for a Deeper DiveCategory: HumanityFormat: Wisdom LibrarySource: On Being ProjectWe are focused on the human transformation that makes social transformation possible. This is work of inner engagement and engagement in the world. Deepened inner life creates space for the moral wrestling that can transform interpersonal relationships. For this reason, our work engages leaders, innovators and changemakers who bring intelligence and teaching to bear on every aspect of human existence — the insights of civic leaders, teachers and neuroscientists in conversation with the wisdom and pastoral intelligence of a community’s religious and spiritual leaders. We take a conflict transformation and peacebuilding approach to the scale of change we believe our world needs and desires. There is an underlying violence that has become a part of our lives. This violence has disrupted nascent relationships, altered our sense of self, and disoriented our relationships with each other and with the world around us. The social healing that is required in the United States, in this sense, is not entirely different from what is needed in war-torn regions of the world.

https://peter-barnes.org/book/ours-the-case-for-universal-property/Ours: The Case for Universal PropertyI want to Learn and I have Time for a Deeper DiveDuration: Time for a Deeper DiveCategory: HumanityFormat: BookSource: Peter BarnesCAPITALISM has two egregious flaws: it relentlessly widens inequality and destroys nature. For billions of people around the world, the challenge of our era is to repair or replace capitalism before its cumulative harms become irreparable. But how, quite practically, can either of those things be done, without sacrificing the benefits of liberty and markets? This book envisions a transformed market economy in which private property and businesses are complemented by universal property and fiduciary trusts whose beneficiaries are future generations and all living persons equally. The way to build such an economy is to add, gradually but steadily over time, a new class of property rights whose beneficial owners are future generations and all living members of society equally, Economists wrangle over monetary, fiscal and regulatory policies but pay little attention to property rights. Their models all assume that property rights remain just as they are forever. But this needn’t and shouldn’t be the case. My premise is that capitalism’s most grievous flaws are, at root, problems of property rights and must be addressed at that level.PROPERTY RIGHTS in modern economies are grants by governments of permission to use, lease, sell or bequeath specific assets — and just as importantly, to exclude others from doing those things. The assets involved can be tangible, like land and machinery, or intangible, like shares of stock or songs. Taken as a whole, property rights are akin to gravity: they curve economic space-time. Their tugs and repulsions are everywhere, and nothing can avoid them. And just as water flows inexorably toward the ocean, so money, goods and power flow inexorably toward property rights... the most oft-forgotten fact about property rights is that they do not exist in nature; they are constructs of human minds and societies. The assets to which they apply may exist in nature, but the rights of humans to do things with them, or prevent others from doing them, do not. Their design and allocation are entirely up to us.In this book, I take our existing fabric of property rights as both a given and merely the latest iteration in an evolutionary process that has been and will continue to be altered by living humans. While eliminating existing property rights is difficult, adding new ones is less so.

https://regeneration.org/Regeneration by Paul HawkenI want to Learn and I have Time for a Deeper DiveDuration: Time for a Deeper DiveCategory: HumanityFormat: BookSource: Regeneration is a radical new approach to the climate crisis, one that weaves justice, climate, biodiversity, and human dignity into a seamless tapestry of action, policy, and transformation that can end the climate crisis in one generation. It is the first book to describe and define the burgeoning regeneration movement spreading rapidly throughout the world. Our purpose is to end the climate crisis in one generation. Ending the crisis does not complete the challenge of global warming. That is a century-long commitment. Ending the crisis means that by 2030 collective action by humanity will have reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 45 to 50 percent. At this writing, we are going backward and increasing emissions. The most common question about the crisis is “What should I do?” How can a person or entity create the greatest impact on the climate emergency in the shortest time? Most people do not know what to do, or may believe the things they can do are insufficient. We think otherwise. Our approach to reversing climate change differs from other proposals. It is based on the idea of regeneration. We do not oppose other strategies and plans. To the contrary, we praise and are grateful for all approaches. Our concern is simple: most people in the world remain disengaged, and we need a way forward that engages the majority of humanity. Regeneration is an inclusive and effective strategy compared to combating, fighting, or mitigating climate change. Regeneration creates, builds, and heals. Regeneration is what life has always done, we are life, and that is our focus. It includes how we live and what we do—everywhere. We have a common interest and that interest can only be served when we come together.

https://earthregenerators.org/the-design-pathway-for-regenerating-earth/The Design Pathway for Regenerating EarthI want to Learn and I have Time for a Deeper DiveDuration: Time for a Deeper DiveCategory: Environmental StewardshipFormat: BookSource: Joe BrewerThis book offers genuine hope. There truly is a pathway to regenerate the Earth. How? We design by embracing the fundamental insight that all living systems self-organize around the patterns of regeneration. Applied to the scale of entire landscapes, this reveals how all truly sustainable human cultures throughout history were organized at the territorial scale as bioregional economies. A planet-wide network of learning ecosystems is needed that can hold the complexity of birthing these regenerative bioregions during and after the rest of the collapse that we were all born into.

But it's also a warning about our own tenuous existence on the planet: that the fate that befell these once soaring flocks foreshadows our own extinction.
